Airbus A380: Will There Be One That Actually Seats 900?

There are rumors that some airline is preparing to cram 900 seats into the Airbus A380. But this seems to be contradicted by the fact that the A380 is only being currently tested with 876. What this means is that approvals will only be granted for that number and nothing more.

It is interesting how everybody is talking about airlines providing extra room and cocktail lounges in this giant bird. More so because of large orders for the A380 from airlines like Emirates who are really not an economy airline.

All this totally ignores the reality of economics. The airline industry is not doing particularly well at the moment and apart from the effects of 9/11, the truth is that many airlines would sell a lot more seats at lower prices. Imagine what would happen to their bottom line if they can do this at a profit.

Then there is the totally ignored fact that the World Wide Web has helped to dramatically fuel an increase demand for world travel. One of the huge remaining obstacles is the cost. One just needs to take a look at what is happening in India (incidentally a very "wired" nation) where air travel has just gone through the roof, totally ignoring obstacles like the after effects of 9/11.

There is no doubt on the mind of this writer that the A380 will mark a dramatic change in world air travel by drastically bringing down the unit cost of air travel and thus tapping into a huge growing and probably insatiable demand, in years to come. We are knocking on the door of super-economy air travel.

In other words Airbus was right and Boeing was wrong. If this proves to be true, it could be an extremely expensive mistake for a company that virtually invented commercial airline manufacturing.

Airplane Flight TWA 800, We Remember You...

How does an airplane suddenly just explode in mid-air? That was the mystery that has for a long time puzzled and nagged at investigators into the Trans World Airlines flight 800 crash of July 17, 1996.

They thoroughly investigated every possible cause, including that of a surface to air missile being fired at the aircraft, as the nation reeled in shock and grief at the loss of all the 230 precious souls aboard.

While on a flight from New York to Paris, TWA flight 800 suddenly exploded, broke up and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Long island, New York.

Finally, detailed painstaking investigations that included reassembling the airline from debris fished out of the Atlantic paid off and the NTSB were able to announce a probable cause that evidence pointed to being very close to the truth of what really happened.

The investigator’s findings were based on a close examination of the reassembled accident aircraft and evidence of a short circuit in the retrieved black box (flight recorder) recording amongst a host of other supporting facts.

Probable cause was an explosion of the center wing fuel tank resulting from ignition of the flammable fuel/air mixture in the tank. Likely source of ignition energy for the explosion was a short circuit outside of the center wing tank that allowed excessive voltage to enter it through electrical wiring linked to the fuel quantity indication system of the aircraft.

Below we carry the fascinating transcript of Air Traffic Control communication with eyewitness aircraft that were around the area at the time of the crash.

But not everybody agrees with the NTSB findings. Read the facts and theories on this controversial air accident.

A380 Success To Wipe Out Smaller Jumbo Jets?

The really scary thing about the A380 super jumbo jet airplane becoming the major success it seems set to be is that its’ success could wipe out smaller jumbo jets.

Here’s how.

By being able to carry so many more passengers (850 plus) it means that the fare per passenger can be dramatically reduced, which will increase passenger volumes even further.

This will in turn leave the much smaller jumbo jet airplanes in a problem. Their economy class special offer will suddenly be too hefty. So what will they do? Fly exclusive first class passengers only? The problem is that the numbers to go round are probably not there. And besides the A380 with its’ huge space can be turned into a luxury airline complete with Casino’s, restaurants, fountains etc.

In other words, any airline that does not have an A380 in its’ fleet will be at a great disadvantage… and soon in serious trouble as all passengers head towards the super jumbo jet.

It gets even scarier. Any manufacturer without an airplane of such size will suddenly find themselves in a rather awkward position as it will rapidly become more difficult to sell anything other than a super jumbo with a seating capacity of 850 plus. It gets even more complex when you don’t even have such an airplane on your drawing boards.

Reduction in Cost-Advantage Selling Point?

The Airbus A380 airplane has certainly been causing major waves in the airline industry since its’ inception on the drawing boards and right up to its’ dramatic test flight last year and even to this moment as we anxiously wait for it to come into service.

Now even other aircrafts are due to be affected by the A380s’ turbulence. Initial safety guide lines indicate that airplanes will have to fly at least twice the normal distance behind the new Airbus A380 superjumbo to avoid the potential dangers from its’ powerful wake.

The official word out based on data analysis of A380 flight tests, is that this bird produces significantly stronger air turbulence and naturally over wider distances than the largest airplanes now in service.

For those in love with numbers this means minimum separation of 10 nautical miles instead of the current 5, for the largest airlines. Although these figures are initial estimates and will almost certainly be revised, they give a good indication of what is to be expected.

Critics of the A380 now say that the airline will dramatically increase congestion at major airports.

So why may all this be significant to sales?

Some analysts feel that the rule of delaying the touch down of the following aircraft much more than usual may reduce cost advantage selling points of the behemoth of an aircraft which is in fact supposed to greatly increase efficiency at congested airports around the world.

The A380 airplane is capable of carrying up to approximately 850 passengers.

Few things in life are more fascinating than the aircraft. Created and invented by man, but much bigger than man. The invention that was most responsible for reducing the world to some small village. Other inventions have come and gone, like pet tags, some are still in use but the aircraft remains uniquely different.

Aircrafts was so big and so important an invention that there had to be a dispute as to whom the right inventor was. For years the Wright brothers were stripped of their rightful honor in a dispute that no smart NY lawyers would have gotten settled in any court in the land.

Fortunately honor finally went where it was due being much more precious to the high-school drop-out Wright brothers than investing in precious metals.

Even as we prepare to enter the era of A380s, hats off to the invention of the millennium.

Is the Airbus 380 being haunted by weight problems?

When an aircraft manufacturer struggles to develop a new aircraft and is constantly dogged by weight problems, what would you conclude when they end up pushing back delivery of their huge new aircraft to their first set of customers?

What’s more the aircraft manufacturer says that the delays are due to required modifications on the plane.

We are of course referring to the Airbus and their new 555-seat behemoth, the A380.

In the announcement in June it is instructive that the aircraft manufacturer firmly refused to specify what particular modifications had delayed delivery.

Maybe the most telling comment came from Richard Aboulafia, vice president of the Teal group, an aerospace consulting firm.

“The A380 delay is serious. It might suggest a problem with the weight of the plane, and therefore with the economics.”

What this aerospace consultant was saying is that Airbus have already priced their new super jet and modifications as a result of weight problems will cause havoc to costing.

Airbus executives announcing the delay were at pains to play it down and emphasized on the fact that no new plane had ever been delivered on schedule after its’ launch.

Probably no other airline in history is being watched with so much interest as the A380. As has been indicated in the earlier blogs, this writer believes that Airbus is correct in its’ projections of future air travel.

There is plenty of evidence that the internet is doing to air travel what the radio did to pop music and rather than reduce travel is triggering a huge growth in worldwide travel which has been somewhat masked by the terrorist threat in recent years.

The amazing growth of air travel in India is one example. The other example that seems to fuel the thinking at Airbus emerged from a recent low-key function presided by an Airbus executive in Africa - of all places.

Airbus vice-president for Africa, Mr Hadi Akoum was in Nairobi, headquarters of one of the very few profitable African airlines, Kenya Airways. Mr Akoum released Airbus’ 20-year global market forecast which had some fascinating revelations and forecasts.

Airbus expect an unprecedented growth in the air transport sector in Africa over the next 20 years. Kenya, in East Africa has already experienced traffic growth in excess of 70 per cent in the last six years. This is absolutely awesome when you consider all the havoc caused by terrorism and even more important the fact that Kenya has been the target of two devastating terrorist attacks over the last 8 years or so.

Airbus expects traffic growth to remain robust in Africa over the next 20 years.

If the previously lowest-traffic continent is experiencing such explosive traffic growth, then my bet firmly remains on the A380 being the most commercially successful airline in history. Even despite the current delays and weight problems.

The A380 will have to go down in history as the most contoversial new aircraft launch ever. If it were one of those technical online college courses then 50 % of the lessons would be about weight problems.

Fly-by wire technology also developed by Airbus) ended up having an impact on auto insurance so will the extensive use of lighweight material to cut down on the weight of the A380 end up being of some use to the auto industry this time? Probably unlikely.

So where will the huge team of extra A380 development engineers go after it's all over, the nearest employment agency?

So many questions associated with the A380 and no answers forthcoming kind of reminds youi of that Viagra lawyer you met who talked so much without answering any question and started his answers each time with the words, "Well, it depends..."

The very first aviation accident

Botched attempts to fly had claimed many lives before the Wright brothers finally launched mankind into the exciting aviation era.

Yet the first aviation accident was destined to happen even as the Wright brothers were still trying to perfect, demonstrate and develop their invention further. It happened in 1908 and is a fascinating part of the history of air travel and aviation accidents.

Much has changed since that first aviation accident.

The most notable is probably the fact that a vast majority of aircraft accidents now happen during take-off and landing. That first aviation accident happened differently.

There were just two people involved. The pilot Orville Wright and Lt Selfridge who was the first secretary of the army’s Aeronautical Experiment Association (AEA) and a man who had followed the experimentation of flying right from the beginning, personally flying and surviving on a few of those dangerous contraptions.

In fact Lt Selfridge was on course to being one of the nation’s leading military aeronautical engineers when that fateful Sept. 17, 1908 aviation accident cut his life and career short.

The aviation accident was later described by Wright himself in a letter to his brother, Wilbur. Here it is:

"On the fourth round, everything seemingly working much better and smoother than any former flight, I started on a larger circuit with less abrupt turns.

"It was on the very first slow turn that the trouble began.

"...A hurried glance behind revealed nothing wrong, but I decided to shut off the power and descend as soon as the machine could be faced in a direction where a landing could be made.

"This decision was hardly reached, in fact I suppose it was not over two or three seconds from the time the first taps were heard, until two big thumps, which gave the machine a terrible shaking, showed that something had broken...

"The machine suddenly turned to the right and I immediately shut off the power.

"...Quick as a flash, the machine turned down in front and started straight for the ground. Our course for 50 feet was within a very few degrees of the perpendicular.

"Lt. Selfridge up to this time had not uttered a word, though he took a hasty glance behind when the propeller broke and turned once or twice to look into my face, evidently to see what I thought of the situation.

"But when the machine turned head first for the ground, he exclaimed 'Oh! Oh!' in an almost inaudible voice.

When the craft hit the ground Selfridge was thrown against one of the wooden uprights of the framework and his skull was fractured. He died later that evening. He was 26.

Wilbur was hospitalized with serious injuries but lived to fly again.

Safety at Airbus

We usually have very short memories.

And maybe it is just as well because if our memory spans were closer to that of an elephant, It would be very difficult to board a plane. (For those unfamiliar with the Elephant-memory-thing, these huge beasts will remember a vital route leading to water that they used once 10 years earlier during a famine to get to a life saving water hole just on time.)

For example the events of September 11 are quickly disappearing from our minds whenever we board a plane these days. Did you fly in the month of September 2001 shortly after the 11th? If you did you’d know what I’m talking about.

But there is yet another safety issue that the folks at Airbus will be anxious to forget.

This was the controversy surrounding one of the best selling airlines they have ever produced - the A320. This aircraft had some highly publicized crashes, very early on. Indeed there are some questions that still linger over some of the air crashes involving the A320. The A320 flew for the very first time in 1984. It began life as a commercial flyer in 1988. It quickly became the fastest selling airliner in the world for several years.

Probably the most memorable A320 crash to experts was the June 26th 1988 one when an Air France A320 crashed during an air show in France, killing 3 passengers. Officially the crash was blamed on pilot error, many questions remained unanswered including a bizarre development where Switzerland’s institute of forensic evidence and criminology determined that the plane’s flight data recorder had been substituted after the crash, placing doubt on the entire investigation.

Many of the A320 accidents were linked to pilot error in using the then brand new fly-by-wire system (more on this later). As this aircraft matured, however, these accidents and the loss of life that went with it (a triple figure digit I believe) did not seem to affect the popularity of the airliner.

The Airbus A320 is a short to medium range commercial passenger jet that was cleverly targeted at the market segment occupied by the then popular Boeing 727 and 737. Actually the guys at Airbus designed an aircraft with a fuel burn of only around 50% of the 727.

Today, more than 2,360 aircraft of the A320 family are in service. The 320 family includes the A319 and A318 short-bodied versions and the A321 stretched version. The A319 entered service in 1996, the A321-100 in 1994 and the A321-200 in 1997. The A318 made its first flight in January 2002 and entered service in July 2003.

What is a fly-by-wire system? This is where the pilot controls the flying of the plane using electronic signals rather mechanically with pulleys and hydraulic systems. This kind of technology has developed today to a point where a computer is literally added between the pilot and the plane. Fly-by-wire has many advantages including the fact that it makes the aircraft lighter because it eliminates bulky hydraulic systems. The computer is also able to perform hundreds of minor adjustments more than a human can in a second, thus making flight smoother, especially in commercial planes. Fuel economy also results.
Some experts believe true fly-by-wire is inevitable in cars in the very near future although certain elements of the thinking have for example already been incorporated in auto braking systems.

Back to the subject of this post, many of this early day A320 accidents were attributed to pilots not understanding the then brand new fly-by-wire system properly. So today that is probably all history, even for Airbus.

Still it will be interesting to see how the new technological developments in the new A380 work out as the aircraft goes through rigorous testing over the next few months.

How safe is the A380 aircraft?

One thing that is very clear is that throughout its’ development the behemoth called the A380 struggled with weight problems.

Airbus engineers and executives admitted that it was this weight problem that consumed months of engineering time and was mainly responsible for pushing costs way above the earlier projected budgets.

“We found there was too much mass,” Jean Claude Schoepf head of the A380 final assembly line admitted to the press during the development stage of this huge aircraft.

The whole project threatened to escalate to a situation where Airbus would come out with a very different airline than what they had promised and committed themselves to clients to produce.

The solution was to head back to the drawing boards and carefully cut down the weights section by section, without compromising on the strength, critical for airlines which spend most of their time in high altitudes.

More carbon composites for example were introduced in the horizontal struts that support the two cabin floors and hold the fuselage in shape.

So desperate was the need for this giant to cut down its’ weight that engineers even used chromate-free paint, which is lighter. According to figures from Airbus, this move helped cut the weight of the outer paint work down to 350 kilograms (770 pounds). This is in comparison to 550 kilogrames (1,210 pounds) for a plane of this size using other paints.

The heavy use of new, weight-saving composites made out of fibreglass-aluminium and carbon fibre and the development of a state-of-the-art wing helped the A380 keep its’ weigh within manageable limits. Actually the long wingspan is the reason airports will need modifications for the A380 to land (more on that later in this article).

Still the end product weights 1 percent heavier that its target of 305 tons, according to Airbus CEO Noel Forgeard. Airbus overspend on the A380 project by $1.9 billion.

Coming to the safety issue, weight is always an important issue when it comes to the safety of aircrafts. Actually it is a critical issue and that is why baggage is always limited and analyzed carefully before any aircraft takes off.

So what does all this mean in terms of the overall safety of this new aircraft? Is it not true that commercial considerations always compromise on the safety of anything? Makes you want to consult Ortho Evra Attorneys, doesn't it?

Actually the truth is that the aviation industry is different in that very high safety standards are taken into account in the manufacture of any aircraft. Safety is always the driving force right from the design stage and even though commercial aspects come into play, safety always over rides them.

A case in point is that an earlier plan by A380 engineers was to keep the wingspan as close to normal as possible despite the extra weight. In the end they were forced to stay with the long wings which are the main reason why airports around the world will be forced to make minor but costly adjustments to accommodate the A380.

What’s more, Airbus projections indicate that this aircraft is going to be very busy (our predictions in this blog concur with this view). So Airbus engineers knew that their handiwork was going to be stretched to the limit when in service, so their was clearly no room for compromises.

Our view is that so far Airbus has been meticulous in its’ safety issues and therefore there should be no reason to doubt this giant project.

What the new A380 aircraft means to you

Everybody is saying basically the same thing. It is a wonder that something so huge can actually get off the ground.

It is instructive that some articles made reference to the fact that the event was taking place 101 years after the Wright brothers’ feat at Kitty Hawk. Instructive because the earlier event made this latest event possible in more ways than one. (see earlier post below on Wright brothers.)

The brilliant Wright brothers proved through their intensive tests in wind tunnels they created themselves that it was possible to get virtually any weight off the ground, you just had to calculate the lift and what you required to get the lift you wanted. That is wing span, shape etc. It was that simple.

Not very different from the principle that you can get a ship of virtually any weight to float on water.

It is even more fascinating to note that before the Wright brother’s land mark achievement there were enough influential people who did not believe that a flying man-made machine was feasible.

But the sceptics this time are of a different nature, actually a commercial nature to be exact.

There is plenty of talk right now after the successful Airbus 380 test flight recently, on who is right about the commercial viability of a really large passenger jet.

The general feeling is that the market is too small to justify this size of aircraft In other words most people believe that it is not economically viable.

The guys at Airbus (and this writer as well? believe that it will be a HUGE commercial success. The guys at Airbus are really not telling us why they think their aircraft will soar business wise, in simple enough language. Probably for obvious reasons – the competition is listening in to every word and this might not be the time to reveal their thinking.

According to me, there is a simple reason why the A380 will be a huge success.

When you increase the carrying capacity of a commercial transport vehicle, you also reduce the cost per person of getting your passengers from one point to another. So without even considering the many other technological aspects that cut costs for any A380 operator, there is already a cost advantage in increasing the passenger numbers.

Now we all know that the internet has made the world a smaller place. But most of us do not realize that there is something else the internet has also done. And that is, it has boosted and encouraged world-wide travel more than anything else. Just like radio boosted sales of music instead of killing it as was initially predicted by virtually everybody, the internet is already doing the same to world travel.

The only problem is that until now, it has been too expensive. Cost cutting measures and cheap fares by successful budget flyers have had only a very limited impact. Now there is a real opportunity to cut down the cost of flying to less than 50% of what it is now with this larger aircraft.

While the plane has the capability of carrying 840 passengers, airlines are planning seating configurations that will limit loads to slightly more than 550 people. I have this feeling that they will revise those numbers upwards shortly after this giant goes into service in mid 2006.

I also have a hunch that this is what the folks at Airbus have seen. Much as I hate to say it, they’re right and they’ll be proved so, very soon.

And don’t forget that Airbus appears to be on a roll in recent times – the company is almost certain to outsell Boeing for a second straight year in 2005. And surely they must know something nobody else seems to know to have spent $13 billion over 11 years developing the A380.

The story of the Wright brothers and their invention which forever changed the world, deserves closer study by everybody.

These guys who had a pretty basic education – they didn’t finish high school. Can you imagine a high-school drop-out who can't handle math taking on financial jobs? Yet the Wright brothers took an extremely engineering approach to the feat of inventing flight. They started by getting their hands on everything they could find about their subject. They read, they wrote to people. (It would have all been so much easier if the internet were around then).

This enabled them to closely study all efforts that had been made so far and to discover where they went wrong (people often got killed trying to fly.)

They then started off by creating their on version of the most advanced glide of the time. They then made modifications as they went ahead.

Interestingly the brothers quickly discovered that most aeronautical data available at the time was unreliable at best and plain inaccurate at worst.

Guess what they did to correct this situation. They started documenting their on more accurate data which they used for their research. The Wright brothers built their own wind tunnel to test airfoils and measure how to lift a flying machine into the sky. As a result, they were the first to discover that a long, narrow wing shape was the most ideal for flight. (It is interesting that A380 engineers were forced to design longer wings to take the huge weight of this new aircraft.) It is these longer wings that will force modifications on most airports so as to accommodate this huge bird.)

They also figured out how to move a plane in mid air, to change direction, height etc. Their other major discovery was recognizing that a propeller is in effect, a rotating wing, they used the data from their wind-tunnel experiments to design the first effective airplane propellers. And when they discovered that a lightweight gas-powered engine did not exist, they decided to design and build their own. It produced 12 horsepower and weighed only 152 lbs, this in itself was quite a feat.

Have you ever wondered why despite the so many attempts to fly, the Wright brothers made sure that there was a photographer at Kitty Hawk, that day. It was because from their tests in the in wind tunnels and from their totally scientific approach, they knew what the Airbus engineers already knew when they prepared for their test flight of the A380 – that the damned thing would fly.
